Fog Lights: How They Work

A lot of people wonder how (and if) fog lights actually work, since many cars seem to do fine without them. In reality, fog lights are more of a convenience than anything–they make a difference, but not such a big difference that they should be required on any car. Fog lights are useful for people who live in areas with a lot of inclement weather, where they might actually save you from an accident.

Interestingly enough, there’s a reason for the fact that many fog lights are yellow. Many think that it’s simply to make them stand out, so other drivers can see you more easily when the fog rolled in. In reality, yellow light works better than white light in foggy situations for one very important reason: less dispersion.

When white light hits a bed of fog, it tends to disperse–each of the component colors (since white light is made up of all colors) break apart and reflect in different directions. This is why you tend to be blinded when shining a bright light into fog. Yellow lights, on the other hand, only have one color. This means that they don’t disperse as much when they hit the fog, so less light is reflected back into your face. So, to protect you safety and provide your front end with a cool look, fog light covers are ideal.
