Aftermarket Headers: How They Work

One of the most important factors for getting your engine to run well is increasing the efficiency of air and exhaust flow. For an engine to run at its absolute maximum efficiency, it has to be able to pull in air and spit out exhaust without anything getting in the way. Stock exhaust systems typically have a few problem areas that reduce the efficiency of exhaust removal–and these problem areas are where aftermarket exhaust parts are designed to help.

Most stock engines have several cylinders that share a single exhaust manifold. This means that when exhaust is spit out of each cylinder, it has to exit through the same manifold used by the other cylinders. Because the cylinders fire at different times, this often means that back pressure builds up in the manifold, making it harder for the exhaust to escape easily.

Exhaust headers are designed to eliminate back pressure. They do this by replacing the single shared manifold with a series of exhaust pipes: one for each cylinder. These individual exhaust pipes are designed to be a specific length so that they exhaust can exit the system as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
