Short Ram Intakes

Everyone knows that gas is the primary source of energy for your car’s engine, but few people think a lot about the other thing your engine burns: air. Every gas engine needs clean air to produce the right combustion reaction to drive the pistons. Even if you’re familiar with the importance of a good air intake system, you might not know how big of a difference little variations in that system can make.

Improving Engine Air Flow

Air temperature is an extremely important variable for high-performance engines. According to some calculations, you can actually increase your engine’s horsepower by one percent if you reduce the temperature of the air coming into the engine by 11°F. This can mean as much as a 10 percent difference in performance if you’re talking about normal outside vs. under hood temperature ratios.

Short ram air intake systems are designed to get cooler air into your engine. If you’re running with a totally stock engine, the air that’s being sucked into the engine is probably coming from somewhere under the hood. This air is extremely hot (as much as 80°F hotter than the outside temperature) and it tends to bog the engine down.

Short ram air intakes pull air from cooler places in the engine compartment, giving you a boost in horsepower–especially at lower RPMs. They’re also designed to produce a nice sound when you’re driving, and like most aftermarket parts, they have great visual benefits when you pop your hood open.
